15 APIs developers need to know | Web design | Creative Bloq

15 APIs developers need to know | Web design | Creative Bloq : "Adam DuVander counts down the 15 APIs you need to solve the most common developer problems. New developer tools are being released daily, and at times you'll probably find yourself choosing between doing your real work and exploring new technologies. Among these developer tools are at least 14,000 public APIs (application program interface), provided by companies to save time, directly solve developer problems or augment their popular services. While disappearing for a day or two diving into something new can be great fun, not everything immediately leads to useful results." Get Ready for the Evolution of Long Tail Keywords, Coming Soon to Mobile Apps - Moz

Get Ready for the Evolution of Long Tail Keywords, Coming Soon to Mobile Apps - Moz : "Get Ready for the Evolution of Long Tail Keywords, Coming Soon to Mobile Apps Mobile The author's views are entirely his or her own (excluding the unlikely event of hypnosis) and may not always reflect the views of Moz. Last month Google made a big announcement, potentially signaling a game changer for search. Google is quietly rolling out app-only content indexing, even if that content isn’t actually hosted on the indexed app. So, what does that actually mean? The game-changing implication is that when you search Google from your phone or tablet, app-only content will “stream” directly to your mobile device — even if you don’t have the app installed. Thus, if I search for the key phrase “hotel tonight in Chicago,” I’ll see results from mobile apps that aren’t installed on my device, sending me directly to app-only content “streamed” from a virtual app hosted on the Google cloud....

How to Get the Data You Need from Google’s Search Analytics API - YouMoz - Moz

How to Get the Data You Need from Google’s Search Analytics API - YouMoz - Moz : "When Google launched secure search in October 2011, we all had to learn how to deal with the “Not Provided” in our analytics reports. My preferred approach to deal with "Not Provided" was getting the data from Webmaster tools (now Google Search Console) was to use the bookmarklet from Lunametrics. Unfortunately, on September 1, 2015, Google retired the original Webmaster tools report, rendering Lunametrics' bookmarklet useless. It’s no longer possible to get the combined data in the same fashion. The good news is that two weeks prior retiring the original Webmaster report, Google launched the Search Analytics API, which allows you to query the data from Search Console directly. Combining this data with data from the Analytics API allows you to generate detailed ranking reports for a big part of your keywords and all your landing pages The only downside is that you'll have t...

7 Illustrations of How Topical Links Impact Rankings, in Theory and Practice - Moz

7 Illustrations of How Topical Links Impact Rankings, in Theory and Practice - Moz : "search engineers have long worked to extract a large number of signals from the simple link, including: Trustworthiness – Links from trusted sites may count as an endorsement Spamminess – Links from known spam sites may count against you Link Manipulation – Looking at signals such as over-optimization and link velocity, search engines may be able to tell when webmasters are trying to "game" the system One of the most important signals engineers have worked to extract from links is topical relevance. Goodbye Internet Explorer, Hello Microsoft Edge - Moz

Goodbye Internet Explorer, Hello Microsoft Edge - Moz : "With the release of Windows 10, the general public can now use Microsoft Edge, Microsoft's new flagship web browser. Microsoft is striking out in new directions with Edge — they're deprecating Internet Explorer for all modern platforms. Such a drastic change is rare in the web development world, so it makes sense to take a moment to understand what this change means. In this article, we'll discuss Microsoft Edge and see how it removes many of the annoying issues of cross-browser development, making it easier for SEO professionals to focus their time and energy on content creation, rather than browser optimization for said content." Choose the right Git branching strategy | Web design | Creative Bloq

Choose the right Git branching strategy | Web design | Creative Bloq : "Using Git for source control is now an industry standard, but how do you know which workflow is best? Lorna Mitchell explores the options. Git is a fantastic tool. Source control tools provide several vital features: a place to keep code, a history of changes, and information about who did what and when. If you and your team are good with commit messages, you may even get bonus info about why a change was made. The distributed tools such as Git and Mercurial also offer many possibilities for collaboration between multiple repositories, as well as providing effective ways of working with branches." Why the future web will be led by visual designers | Web design | Creative Bloq

Why the future web will be led by visual designers | Web design | Creative Bloq : "The internet is vast, and has come a long way in a comparatively short time. It’s hard to remember, sometimes, why we ever did things the way we did. Years of background, trial and error, and learning often get condensed into simple explanations like, "It's best practice." Then the client says, "Yeah, but why?" and we struggle to put all of that context into words. We've all been there." Case Study: How We Removed a Massive Manual Google Penalty in 5 Steps - Moz

Case Study: How We Removed a Massive Manual Google Penalty in 5 Steps - Moz : "Recovering from the penalty was a very painful process. There were two in-house marketing departments that hired several agencies to analyze over 2,500 linking domains. They spent a year and a half trying to remove the penalty, which included submitting numerous reconsideration requests that failed. Since we finally had the penalty revoked, we wanted to share our experience with other companies, website owners, and SEOs that might be suffering from the same problem, and include some useful tactics for removing penalties. It is also important to give credit to our  outstanding consultant  who helped us overcome the disaster."
